Chapter Twelve
Sam looked out the window, the morning sun glinting off the snow practically blinded him. He was grateful there hadn’t been any additional snowfall through the night, but the bigger issue was the emotion slowly seeping into his body, an emotion up until now he hadn’t recognized. Christmas joy.
He’d come here looking for solitude to embrace his pain, and instead, merriment was on the menu. Megan and Becca were a powerful combination. He didn’t stand a chance against them as they continued to make him feel more alive than he had in two years. Then there was the stirring of attraction that he felt toward Megan and couldn’t deny. The sooner he left Hallbrook, the better. He wasn’t sure how long he could hold out against her sweet appeal. Falling for her was not on his agenda. It couldn’t be.
He made his way to the kitchen, started a pot of coffee, and then pulled out his phone and dialed the police station. “Good morning. This is Sam Wyatt. Just checking in to see if there are any updates on when the pass will reopen?”
“Good morning. And I’m sorry, I don’t have better news. The side of the mountain is unstable, and it’s slowing down the progress of reopening the pass. The latest projections are that it could take a few more days to clear Tinsel Pass.”
“Days? That’s crazy. Are you sure?”
“Yes, sir. Crews are only working daylight hours for their safety. I’m sure you understand. Also, if the next storm comes in and hits, it’s going to slow the progress down more. We’re hoping it skirts around us this time.”
“You realize Christmas is Saturday?” Sam paced the floor, unsure how to feel about the news. It gave him more time with Megan, but the question was, did he want it? If he was honest with himself, he knew the answer was yes.
“I do, and I’m sorry. But I can’t change the facts. Do you have any updates on Frank O’Malley? They’re trying to figure out if we need to send in a Skidoo with a medic sled to get him out of there and to the hospital to make sure the prognosis is on the right track. We’ve got our hands full here, so if we can avoid taking those measures, it would be best.”
“He’s doing better. Megan is almost positive it’s a sprained ACL, and between her and his wife, they’re keeping ice on it, keeping it elevated, and keeping an eye on him.”
“Sounds great. I’ll pass the info along. I’m sure Captain James will be glad to hear it.”
Sam brushed a hand through his hair and looked up, surprised to discover Megan watching him from the doorway. Her red sweater molded the soft curves of her body, the hem ending around her thighs. Faded jeans and fur-lined boots completed the fresh country-girl image.
“Thanks for the update.” He let out a deep breath and hung up the phone.
“Who were you talking to?” She stayed by the kitchen doorway, keeping her distance from him.
